The Secondary School Scholarship Program provides support for high-achieving students who cannot otherwise afford to continue their education after sixth grade because there are no public secondary schools in Santiago Atitlán. The program commits to funding a student through graduation and provides tutoring support to ensure they get there.

The scholarship program’s first graduate, Candelaria Esquina (pictured teaching above) now has two jobs as an elementary educator: one with the Puerta Abierta Library, where she completed her required volunteer work as a student, and the other with a local preschool. As the traveling library coordinator, she has taken over the work of the Panabaj Escuelita where the IHF has been working since 2004. The program works to pair donors and students and is currently looking for sponsors for seven more students.
