A smokeless stove.*Stove Maintenance Kit includes ladder, spoon, and brush

**20 Stove Set provides for an entire community

The IHF’s clean cookstove project continues to install stoves in the Kodaikanal area over five years after its launch by the original IHF chapter at Dartmouth College and the Betsy Elizabeth Trust. The Smokeless Stove Project also provides medical assistance for families with respiratory illness caused by indoor air pollution.

The smokeless stoves reduce indoor concentrations of dangerous carbon monoxide gas by 76 percent, meaning healthier lungs and healthier lives for young children. In response to its long-term success, the IHF is exploring the possibility of expanding the program to other areas in the state of Tamil Nadu. Student volunteers from Oxford University traveled to India this summer to conduct need and feasibility assessments in the village of Parayar. Their report will be used to determine what changes would be necessary to make the clean cookstove project suitable for the new context and climate. They have even explored the possibility of piloting the use of solar cookers on a small scale in Parayar to test their local feasibility. The students plan to return next summer to advance the project.
